Mind-bending stories

Movies

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

The Matrix (1999) (and its sequels)

Memento (2000)

Inception (2010)

Looper (2012)

Live Die Repeat / Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

TV

LOST (TV series) (2004-2010)

Dark (TV series) (2017-2020)

The opening credits and graphics for this TV series are a rich metaphor for the complex narrative of this sci-fi show on Netflix. Images from the story are reflected in kaleidoscopic patterns. Simple objects become more complex. Images are fragmented and don't show the viewer the entire picture. The innocuous looks pregnant with malice. The pernicious becomes camouflaged.

Because characters frequently appear in different storylines and timelines, and may not resemble their younger or older selves, it can tax a viewer's mind keeping it all straight. (Poring over explanations of episodes on Fandom's Dark Wiki is nothing to be ashamed of.)

Another rich metaphor belongs to the Rubik's Cube sitting on a policeman's desk. Each episode of "Dark" is like a twist of the cube. Sometimes the "colors" line up, sometimes they don't. Sometimes a change in one dimension creates confusion in others.

Novels

There Is No Antimemetics Division (2020) (see my blog post)
