Dear brother and sister and children,

I seat myself to try to answer your kind and welcome letter that we received yesterday. And I was glad to hear from you all and to hear that you was all well and doing well. We are all well at this time, truly hoping you are all the same.

Well, Jackson and Alvin and Lucy Ann I want to see you all the worst I ever did _____ _____. When I get to studying about you all a-being so far from us it seems like I can't stand it. Jackson and Alvin and Lucy An I think of you all _____. I wish you was all here to help us eat apples. Marthey Jane my dear sister you said you wanted me to take your little basket and get it full of apples and set down and eat [illegible]. I took your little basket and got it full of apples and sit down and eat a heap for you all. 

Lucy Ann your new dress is mighty pretty _____. Marthey Jane I will send you all a piece of my new dress so _____close for this time. Write soon and by.

(a) William Lacy, Jr. (1813-1886) (William Woolsey's grandfather) and his second wife,
(b) Nancy Jane Clinton McDuffee (1841-1911) (Martha Jane McDuffee Lacy's mother).

Attached to this letter was another letter, probably from Nancy Jane Lacy, Sarah's mother. No transcription available at this time due to the legibility of the photocopy.
